“The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked,” Jeremiah 17:9. The very fact that the heart is deceitful means that your own heart deceives you. You can be in spiritual darkness and not realise it. This is the nature of sin and a sin darkened heart. So the Bible says, their minds are darkened and they are alienated or estranged from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart. This is the reality of the world in which we live. Why is this? Because their deeds are evil. We are all born into a world of sin darkened hearts. We have all sinned. We have all come short of the glory of God. There is none righteous, no not one. And this has been the picture ever since sin entered the world in the garden of Eden. We all see sin in the Bible, there was something that happened in the garden of Eden which should never have happened. There was disobedience to the Lord God. Sin came into the world. The floodgate opened to a tsunami of sin. Everyone since has been born into this world with a sinful nature.

All of us have an innate sense of justice, albeit one that is corrupted by sin. While some of us applaud the sentence of a judge, some will think it too harsh and others that it is too lenient. We are all sinfully different. The Old Testament law says that the punishment should fit the crime. Those punishments were not about personal vengeance.

The people were being punished for their idolatry, but God had a remnant. Daniel and his friends were going to be fed on the best of the palace food, but Daniel politely asked to be allowed to eat a simple diet of pulses and water. He did not want to defile himself. He determined to remain faithful and the Lord blessed him.
