Before we consider the subject of divorce, it is important to understand what marriage is. God made man male and female and God instituted marriage. Biblical marriage is a permanent relationship between one man and one woman, which should only be brought to an end by death. In our world, all are in rebellion against God. This is our natural disposition. Psalm 2 speaks of the rulers of this world conspiring against the LORD and his Christ, seeking freedom from God's laws. We have seen national leaders pushing for same sex marriage; it was legalised in England in 2014 and now it is legal in the Isle of Man. The legacy of current world leaders is that of rebellion. We are to pray for our rulers, that they might repent from this rebellion. Marriage is a picture of the church: It points to the Lord Jesus Christ and it illustrates the relationship he has with his church.

Passage: James 5:13-16
Series: James
Duration: 46 mins 48 secs
"Everything is God's fault" is a common view, when trouble comes. There is a tendency to blame God for all afflictions. The Christian is to respond to difficulties with prayer, recognising that though you are weak, God is powerful. When you are cheerful, sing a song of praise to God, like the Psalmist did. Sinful man is unlikely to give God a thought when things go well.

If any in the church are sick in bed, the elders are to be called for. If you are sick, it would be nice to have a call from you to let me know. I can pray for you. It seems that I am much more likely to have a hospital call to someone's death bed. That is a cherished part of my work.

But for God's grace, you could be the perpetrator of some of these terrible things happening in our world. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Contrast your wickedness with the love, mercy and grace of God.

Again and again James has considered the use of the tongue. Now he warns not to swear oaths. In the days of Amos the people were swearing by the false gods of nature. This was condemned by the prophet. It was the same in the days of our Lord's earthly ministry. The scribes and the Pharisees were teaching that you should not swear by the temple but by the gold. You need to be careful about how you speak. What exactly is to be our attitude to oaths? The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith is helpful.

Jesus was obedient to the laws demands even unto the death of the cross. We are going to consider the law as it relates to christians. There is confusion within the church about the law. First of all, salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. There are many religious people in this world who try to justify themselves by keeping the law. Many, especially in our western world, who would claim to have no religious belief at all but who say I live a good life. This too is self justification. If there is a God I am good enough to get to heaven.

The Lord Jesus Christ declared clearly that he had come to fulfil the whole of the Scriptures, what we know of as the Old Testament. You need to remember this when you read the Old Testament.

A strong warning to the ungodly rich. Your silver and gold; your accumulated wealth will be of no use to you before the judgment of God. Do not be like those who hoard. Trust in the Lord and use what you have for his glory as you help others.
