Surely there can be no greater incentive for heart purity than the prospect of seeing God. There is a sense in which we can see something of God now. The heavens declare the glory of God. But rebellious man will insist that there is no God, that everything came from a big bang. Now, Paul says that the wrath of God is revealed from heaven. The invisible attributes of God are clearly seen. You have no excuse for your insistance that there is no God.

Passage: James 3:1-12
Series: James
Duration: 34 mins 56 secs
A warning to all aspiring teachers in the church. Be not many masters knowing that we shall receive greater condemnation. A person who teaches from the word of God has a tremendous responsibility. I used to be a school teacher. I had to try and get it right. The children often looked for any error I would make and they would occasionally find them. This applies to all in teaching ministry from Sunday school to bible study. Such people will have to give an account to God . Lenski said that teachers ought to convey the teaching of the word in the way that God wants them to. Was James trying to discourage teaching? In Hebrews, we read an admonition because many were still on the ABCs when they should have been teaching themselves. So James was not putting people off. There is a shortage of teachers today. Many churches pray regularly for God to send them a Pastor to feed them the word of truth. Even if you never teach in the Church, if you call yourself a christian you ought to be witnessing the gospel of Christ, in your family, school or work. There are always opportunities to talk about what Jesus has done for sinners. All christians offend, we stumble and make mistakes. We sin, but we do not fall. As a christian you are secure in Christ. If you don't offend in word you are perfect. James is not teaching sinless perfection. He is talking about training your body to do what it should do. This is a level of maturity whereby you can control your tongue.

Christians do descend into the pit of despair. We are exhorted to rejoice in the Lord always. But there is sin everywhere. It is a daily battle which sometimes leads to the depths of despair, a deep depression. Elijah was a prophet of God who prayed a prayer of despair. He asked the Lord to kill him. He must have been extremely miserable. There are many others in the Bible, including Hannah who was in bitterness of soul when her adversary provoked her severely. Read the Psalms of David and see the despondency that he experienced.

The Letter to the Hebrews refers to Abraham's offering of his son Isaac as an act of faith and Abraham himself referred to it as worship.

This text does not just touch on the surface. It penetrates deep into the heart. It is the word of God. It has no regard for an outward and superficial purity. The Lord Jesus Christ called the Scribes and Pharisees hypocites. This is still valid today. An outward show of purity may impress men, but it will never deceive God.

Passage: James 2:14-26
Series: James
Duration: 36 mins 25 secs
Are we saved by faith alone or by faith plus works? Is there a contradiction between Paul and James? The Christian is to be zealous of good works. A genuine saving faith in Jesus will be seen in works. So James says that faith without works is dead. The examples of Abraham and Rahab the harlot are given.

Passage: Matthew 5:7
Duration: 35 mins 5 secs
Jesus describes you, Christian friend, as blessed are the merciful and as receiving mercy. The Greek word translated here as merciful is only found here and in Hebrews 2:17, where Christ is described as "a merciful and faithful high priest". In the context this means actively compassionate. In all his life, he was merciful to outcasts. To some degree if you belong to Jesus, you should show something of his compassion.

Passage: James 2:1-13
Series: James
Duration: 38 mins 19 secs
How do you react to a rich person coming to church? Is it the same as to a poor person. There is to be no discrimination in the church.

Passage: Matthew 5:6
Duration: 36 mins 29 secs
When you got up this morning you probably had breakfast. Perhaps you were even peckish at the time. However, to hunger and to thirst is to have a strong desire. Think of the craving that a drug addict has. He will do anything for his next fix. This text is not talking about what this world offers. Righteous means a right standing before God. There is no one righteous no not one. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. The world is full of people who acknowledge that they are sinners, but instead of casting themselves on God's mercy they try to establish their own righteousness. This is what all religion outside of Christ is about.

Passage: James 1:26-27
Series: James
Duration: 24 mins 30 secs
We do not like our Christian faith being described as a religion. For many, religion is all about what we must do to please God, when the Christian faith is all about what God has done for us. However, James here defines what pure religion is: Biblical Christianity is the only pure religion and it involves the Christian living a sanctified life and confirming that he is born-again and saved, by what he says to and what he does for the brethren.
