But for God's grace, you could be the perpetrator of some of these terrible things happening in our world. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Contrast your wickedness with the love, mercy and grace of God.

Again and again James has considered the use of the tongue. Now he warns not to swear oaths. In the days of Amos the people were swearing by the false gods of nature. This was condemned by the prophet. It was the same in the days of our Lord's earthly ministry. The scribes and the Pharisees were teaching that you should not swear by the temple but by the gold. You need to be careful about how you speak. What exactly is to be our attitude to oaths? The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith is helpful.

Jesus was obedient to the laws demands even unto the death of the cross. We are going to consider the law as it relates to christians. There is confusion within the church about the law. First of all, salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. There are many religious people in this world who try to justify themselves by keeping the law. Many, especially in our western world, who would claim to have no religious belief at all but who say I live a good life. This too is self justification. Some things in life are not necessarily bad, but if it takes a higher priority to the Lord it bad. It is good to plan ahead, but remember your life is brief and you should make sure that your plans are all in the will of God. It is foolish to live your life just for what this life offers.

The characteristics of the Christian are seen in the effects. Christian, you are the salt of the earth. Salt preserves and it slows down the rotting process. Are you one who notices the standards of decency being lowered and the first to speak up for holiness. Or if you spoke up, would you be seen as a hypocrite?

One major reason for trouble in the Church is gossip. People speak evil about each other, often with a self-righteous spirit. There is a place for reproof, but it must be done righteously with a spirit of meekness. This is hard because we all have an internal struggle with sin.
