It is easy to be complacent, to be at ease in Zion, even when the world is falling down all around us. As the Psalmist said, Ps 52:7, "Low, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthenth himself in his wicked ways." As sin abounded and the warnings of Isaiah sounded out they were at ease, they were living a carefree life of abundance. Sadly, this is rather like our time today. We have an abundance which gives us a sense of security, we don't need to notice the bad things in the world around us, indeed it is unpleasant to notice them. However, the Lord would have us rise up and take notice.

The enemy is powerful, and the difficulties facing the church are real. They saw physical strength and technology as the answer. If only we were stronger and had the latest methods, is that us when we as a church experience the adversary attacking the gospel, attacking the church? Trusting in these things appeals to our logic and pride. We are wrong to do so. They trusted in earthly things but "they looked not unto the Holy One of Israel."

What a prospect, Isaiah tells the people that after the days of judgement, the time was coming when there would not only be blossoming buds but also fruit, not a small harvest, but the Lord will fill the face of the world with fruit. This can only speak to us of the Messiah, the true vine, who has sent out his good news into all the world to make disciples of every tribe and nation in this age. All who have faith in Christ are the sons of Abraham.
